The Chief's Message

Chief of the Westlery Police department

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Westerly Police Website. In our effort to become more accessible to the community of Westerly, we have greatly enhanced our site. By visiting this site, it will allow you a better understanding of the services which we provide. All members of the department strive to meet the needs of the citizens as police professionals.

The Westerly Police Department was founded in 1873 under Chief Charles H. Chapman along with four patrolmen. Today, the department is staffed with 50 full time sworn officers, 12 civilian employees and more than 40 part-time officers.

In September of 2007 we were pleased to open our new headquarters located at 60 Airport Road. The new facility houses all operations including patrol, dispatch, investigations, detention and administration. In addition, the facility will serve as a regional emergency operations center.

The Westerly Police Department values the support we receive from the community. We seek to make Westerly a safe community by aggressively investigating reported crimes and proactively preventing crime. Our work is based upon our motto:

"Pride-Integrity-Commitment"

Thank you for visiting the Westerly Police Department Website.
Edward A. Mello Chief of Police
